Biography

I joined as the very first lecturer at the inception of the B.Sc. Health Promotion degree course, which commenced in the Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Rajarata University, in 2004. It was the first Health Promotion degree program in Sri Lanka, and in the entire South Asia region. The challenge of handling all aspects of a degree course being initiated for the first time in this country was a huge challenge and an unique opportunity. I have great satisfaction in looking back at how we managed to set up this study programme from its very first steps – with no delays, interruption or major incidents – until it became established as a well-recognized and respected degree. I recall with pleasure the effort I managed to put in, to handle this stage successfully, when I was the only staff member dealing with all matters of the entire course in the first four years. I had invaluable support from the current and former staff of the Department of Biological Sciences and our Faculty and University and our honorary consultant, as well as from the extended faculty from the applied sciences, social sciences and public health fields that I had to reach out to for support. Much of the teaching, assessments and supervision of field work was handled by me. In addition, there was the administration and linkages with the local and global arena that had to be worked out anew. Achieving the status of a separate department was yet another milestone I look back on, with great satisfaction. I was, as a result, fortunate to become the first Head of the new Department of Health Promotion. While serving as the coordinator, and then Head of Department, I continued my studies at the Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya to complete my M.Phil. degree (2010) and the Department of Community Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo to complete my Ph.D. (2018) degree in Health Promotion and became a first Professor in Health Promotion (2021). My capacity in teaching Health Promotion was further strengthened through the training component of the Ph.D. program being with the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University, Australia.
