Faculty of Applied Sciences

The Central Province Affiliated University College (CPAUC) in Polgolla, located at a distance of 140 km from the main campus at Mihintale was amalgamated to the RUSL as its Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS). After functioning for nearly 10 years at Polgolla, the FAS was finally established in the premises of the main campus at Mihintale, on 16^th January 2006 upon completion of Stage I of the building complex. The faculty, in conformity with the vision of the RUSL, envisions to be a dynamic, innovative and renowned centre of excellence in learning, research, training and consultancy with emphasis on national relevance and international recognition in the different disciplines of Applied Sciences. Its mission is to promote learning, research and training among all members of the university, industry and community and to help individuals achieve their full potential through development of the whole person with a view of making significant contributions to the regional, national and global needs.

The FAS, consists of five departments viz: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Computing, Health Promotion and Physical Sciences. The Department of Biological Sciences offers courses in the fields of disciplines of Botany, Zoology, Biology, Department of Chemical Sciences offers courses in Chemistry, Department of Computing offers courses in Computer Science and Information Technology, Department of Health Promotion offers courses in Health Promotion whereas the Department of Physical Sciences offers Physics, Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. At present, thirteen degree programmes including three B.Sc. Degree programmes, eight BSc Honours Degree programmes and two Joint Major Degree programmes are offered internally by the FAS. From its inception, the faculty follows the course unit system and all the programmes are offered in English medium.
